Arlene Custock
Arlene has always desired to create beauty since her childhood. In 2015, she began her calligraphy journey and the creative spirit came to life. "It felt like someone had shaken a bottle of champagne and popped the cork. I attended every single workshop I could attend and spent every spare minute writing. Calligraphy and art have become a huge part of my life. The creative part of me sprang to life as a result of this," she shared.
An active member of multiple calligraphy guilds and IAMPETH, Arlene has not encountered a script she did not enjoy studying! Arlene credits her greatest calligraphic influence to her years of study under Michael Sull, whose kindness and passion for the Spencerian script have marked her indelibly. Many other calligraphy teachers and friends have impacted her calligraphy journey, such as Nina Tran (@anintran).
Calligraphy and art blended together when Arlene began making birthday cards for friends, family, and her employees. She also creates certificates for her employees each year in recognition of their contributions.
Through The Art of Letters’ mentorship initiative, Arlene has grown as an artist, with a special interest in painting landscapes and clouds. Arlene enjoys watercolour and acrylic painting.

Drawing from the opening verses of Psalm 23, this piece visualizes tranquility and restoration: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” Calm hues and gentle movement evoke peace and spiritual renewal.
