An artist based in USA

Arlene Custock

Arlene has always desired to create beauty since her childhood. But, it was not until recent years that she had the opportunity to delve deeper into art. In 2015, she began her calligraphy journey and the creative spirit came to life. She shares that "It felt like someone had shaken a bottle of champagne and popped the cork. I attended every single workshop I could possibly attend and spent every spare minute I could writing. Calligraphy and art have become a huge part of my daily life now. I can honestly say, the creative part of me sprang to life as a result of this artistic journey."

A dear friend Nina Tran (@anintran) has been a very great influence in her pursuit of calligraphy. Arlene credits her greatest calligraphic influence to the several years of study under Michael Sull. His passion for Spencerian script, love of teaching, and kind mentorship have left an indelible mark in her life. There are also many other calligraphy teachers and friends who have deeply impacted her calligraphy journey.

Calligraphy and art came together when she began making birthday cards for friends, family, and her approximately 35 employees. She also creates certificates for her employees each year in recognition for their contributions. She also does watercolour painting, and has recently started using acrylics.

A active member of multiple calligraphy guilds, and of IAMPETH, Arlene has not encountered a script she did not like to study! Through this mentorship journey, Arlene has grown and come to view herself as an artist, with a special interest in painting landscapes and clouds.
