An artist based in Singapore

Nichole Tin

Nichole Tin is a Singapore-based Calligraphy artist. Having lived in Australia for 9 years long, the western cultures coupled with her life experience growing up in multiple South East Asian cities brought her much appreciation for the Western and Chinese arts.

Her first encounter to western calligraphy and lettering arts was through a casual chat with a book store owner who happened to be an arts lecturer at one of the local university in Australia, who also happened to be an avid learner of western penmanship. Through his recommendation, she picked up a few penmanship books which kickstarted her art practice.

By 2015, she relocated to Singapore and started Nicnkotori Studio, a creative studio that specializes in commercial pointed pen calligraphy and script designs for clients' needs. Upon her relocation to Singapore, she also realized the sparse resources that the local aspiring western calligraphers had and began reaching out to fellow calligraphers in the local community to start a Singapore-based calligraphy collective, Scribblers Collective (currently on hiatus). The formation of the group was to allow the members in the collective to have a support system and like-minded members to reach out to as well as to spread the awareness of western calligraphy to the local community. Since then, she has organized, curated and participated in several calligraphy exhibitions and events for the team and the local community. She has also been volunteering her time at Beginners’ Table, a calligraphy-sharing platform that offered free-to-public calligraphy ‘tasters’’ by other seasoned calligraphers.

Prior to The Art of Letters mentoring initiative, her personal collection of artworks are primarily focused on 18th century style calligraphy and illustrations. Presently, her works have evolved to be more expressive and personal to her than before.
