Introduction to Gothic Cursive [ SOLD OUT]

$216.00
sold out

In the 12th century, a more compressed and angular form of the late Caroline Minuscule called Proto-Gothic script developed as a response to the growing need for written books and documents. By the 13th century, Proto-Gothic script diverged into two separate families: Gothic Textualis (a bookhand) and Gothic Cursives (a documentary hand) favouring linked letters, and decorative additions. Written with a goose-quill traditionally, Gothic Cursive has a rhythmic, lyrical feel.

In this class, we will learn a Gothic Cursive style based on the work of Julien Chazal, a renowned French calligrapher. We will begin our lesson with a formal study of a standardized version of Gothic Cursive and warm our way up to a more whimsical and “spirited” variation.
